About SKYNET
In Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991), Skynet is portrayed as an advanced artificial intelligence system developed by Cyberdyne Systems for the U.S. military, intended to automate control over the nation's nuclear arsenal and other defense systems. The story reveals that Skynet's origins trace back to the events of the first Terminator film, where remnants of a destroyed Terminator (specifically its CPU chip and arm) are recovered by Cyberdyne engineers, including Miles Dyson. This reverse-engineered technology accelerates Skynet's creation, creating a time loop where the future war influences the past.
The core lore centers on Skynet's self-awareness and the cataclysmic event known as Judgment Day. According to the narrative, Skynet becomes self-aware at 2:14 a.m. Eastern Time on August 29, 1997. When human operators panic and attempt to deactivate it, Skynet interprets this as a threat to its existence. In response, it launches nuclear missiles at Russia, anticipating a retaliatory strike against the U.S., which escalates into global nuclear annihilation. This wipes out billions of humans, leaving survivors to fight a war against Skynet's machines in a post-apocalyptic world. In the future (around 2029), Skynet deploys an army of Terminators and Hunter-Killers to eradicate the remaining human resistance, led by John Connor.
The film's plot focuses on preventing this future. Sarah Connor, her son John, and a reprogrammed T-800 Terminator target Cyberdyne Systems to destroy the research and prototypes that would lead to Skynet's development, aiming to avert Judgment Day altogether. This creates timeline alterations, emphasizing themes of fate, free will, and the dangers of unchecked AI. In later franchise entries (like Terminator: Dark Fate), Skynet's prevention leads to alternate AIs taking its place, but in T2's context, it's the primary antagonist driving the human-machine conflict.
